Finally, my entrance into the vinyl rabbit hole!

I’ve been waiting for this day. I’ve finally got my own TT! And not too bad of one at that. Found it at an estate sale, it is a Technics SL-3200. The guy had all sorts of gear, from Yamaha to McIntosh (I’ll provide the pics later), and I wanted it all, but I only had enough money for the Technics. Which was fine, because that was the thing I wanted to take home the most to be honest. The turntable is pretty dirty, but it works. I don’t know the condition of the stylus, but I think it is OK. Cartridge doesn’t look too bad either, but I will probably replace both in the future. Haven’t hooked it up yet, right now I’m just sitting down to clean it up.

As you can see, it’s not very clean. The guy just wanted it gone, so he gave it to me for $40 and he just gave me a DEEMA CarboTex carbon fiber anti static brush, so that’s nice to have.
Any thoughts on this TT? Recommendations for future cartridges and styluses (styli? Stylus? I don’t know, if someone could inform me on the proper plural word, that would be nice :wink: )?

I have just read this great short thread from Stereophile. Any other advice as to a switch I can use to stop this?

The pre-amp volume is down to zero. Pre's power is off.

Then the amp is switched off...10-15 seconds later..thud,thud,thud,thud and thud.

Kind-of loud too. The Tritons sub amp is turned to less than midway also.

I read to turn the speakers powered amp down to zero. It might be hard to reach when they're in their final position. Is that going to be the norm if I continue to use the Adcom GFA 555II with these powered towers?

Any advice is gladly appreciated. ;)

I no longer need these two pieces. They are in perfect shape, I bought them off Audiogon a couple of years ago and they have worked flawlessly.

$400 plus shipping. If you have never seen these units, they are extremely small, which is why I like them.

Braided wire sleeves

I'll start off by saying I'm fairly cheap. I fully well understand and accept the fact that higher quality cabling makes a difference. I just can't bring myself to spend hundreds to thousands of $$$ on interconnect & speaker cables. I use Blue Jean Cable RCA's because I can hear the difference and still afford the quality. Furez cable splitters & copper banana connectors from Douglas Connections. But when it comes to speaker cabling I buy Belden 5T00UP 10 AWG in a 500' box and use it for in-wall & external speaker connections and make my own cables to the lengths I want. What I'd like to find is a good, flexible, colored, braided sleeve that I can put the 10 AWG speaker cables in for a more finished & professional look and more WAF, which has become an issue recently. I would probably finish the ends off with some shrink sleeve. Who out there in Polk Land is doing this and has a good lead on braided sleeve? Thanks

Magnifi Max SR Subwoofer Crackling

Had the Magnifi Max SR for around a month and from day one the wireless subwoofer has a constant low crackling sound. Supplier suggested updating to latest software (79) using google home app. No difference. Tried using hdmi arc and optical. No difference. Tried plugging into different power sockets (even in different rooms). No difference. My supplier has now said that Polk are aware of the problem and should fix it at sometime in the future with a new software update but don't know when?! This has become such a problem I have just unplugged the sub. A real shame because the sound is great from this system. If this ain't fixed soon I'll be returning it.
Any ideas?

...and it turns out I have some extra liquidity which will enable me to upgrade my system.

I run lossless WAV files into a Squeezebox Touch and then to a Grant Fidelity Tube DAC-09. I'm primarily amping with a Yaqin MC-10t, but sometimes using an an Adcom GFA-555 II with my old Luxman R-115 amp as a pre. Speakers are LSiM-705's.

If you had $10k to upgrade this system, what would you do? I'm partial to tubes but would possibly... possibly... consider solid state. The McIntosh name and legacy has my attention, as it's never been in my price range before. But I'm very open to others.

SDA SRS 2 if great shape. With cable, blade/blade $400

RTA 11T. (Not TL) mint condition. 225.00

SDA CRS (no cable) twin tweeter blade/blade one cab is ruff shape needs vaneer glued back down on one of the rear corners. Drivers are all graet and so are screens. $215.00

B&K Ref 20 pre with remote and oem box. Mint condition. $170 + sh.

Parasound 2250 v2 mint condition with box.

All items located on Merritt Island FL. 45 min east of Orlando. 32953.

All speakers are local pick up only. All screens are in great shape. All drivers are perfect.

Smoke free home. Non of them stink and are 100% functional.

sunfire true sub amp question

i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of ideas on this.
I was given a sunfire true equalizer sub that was damaged in a surge.
When i turn it on it just emits a low constant buzz.
i suspect the amp is damaged and was thinking about taking it to a local amp guy who might be able to repair it.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions what it could be?
I am handy with a solder gun if I have been told what to do. I do not know how to troubleshoot electronics on a component level though.

Backert Rhumba 1.2 vs Cary SLP-98

first off, I'm not an audiophile, but a hi-fi enthusiast ... here's my experience

I've had the SLP-98 Cary for a few years and I am totally happy with her, with the single exception of zero XLR connections. When a local offer of a Rhumba 1.2 came available, I couldn't resist the temptation. This offer was about 6 weeks ago, LONG AFTER the CP demo of the first iteration, which I somehow missed.

The Rhumba 1.2 (Not the Extreme) sports these updates over the original version.
From Backert:
- Enhanced “all GreenForce” power supply – increases access to pure AC from the wall outlet, giving the Rhumba 1.2 even more rhythm and dynamics
- Improved power supply regulator
- Premium Jensen transformers
- More massive front plate
- Additional chassis damping throughout
- New Silk II circuit in gain stage and regulator for better dynamics, more sweet and open sound
- Ceramic tube sockets
- Phase correct
- Enhanced gold IEC inlet from Furutech
- Enhanced circuit board: double the copper

- Red/blue cover options, $100

Mine arrived in basic black

This pre is solid and competes respectably with the Cary. However, Cary dominates wrt musicality and rhythm, as I kind of expected it to.
Don't get me wrong, the Rhumba is musical, with rhythm, it's just that Cary has more of it. Which I like a lot.
The Cary rules in the lower frequencies, too. That, I was't anticipating.

I received the Rhumba with late model Telefunkens and sounded ok, but dry
The only tubes rolled into the Rhumba (so far) are late 1950's GE JG 5814A grey plates
and 1960s Tung Sol 12AU7 grey plates.

Both are good pre amps. But for comparable used US dollars spent (minus the cost of tubes), the nod goes to the "sweet little pre" (i.e. SLP)

Time will tell. But, for now, Cary stays . . .

Is B&K reference 200.5 internally balanced?

I am using Emotiva xsp-1 as a preamp and using the B&K as a power amp. I have a pioneer avr connected to the emotiva and use the HT bypass on emotiva when watching a movie. Both the pre and power amps have balanced and unbalanced connectors. When using balanced cable from emotiva to B&k there is a 3db drop in output. I had been expecting an increase not a decrease. Just using monoprice xlr as I had wanted to see if balanced would increase the dB at at same volume setting. Any ideas on why this is happening?

Just purchased one of these off a popular auction site. I have a CD player acquisition "problem". Photos from the ad:

Given the age of the player, I'm excited at what appears to be the almost mint condition it's in. I'll post up some photos of my own once it arrives. Apparently these are pretty rare, with only 7,000 units made according to one site I read.
