SDA 1c - Full Mods

Time to let someone else enjoy these fine speakers. Work/mods include: Sonicap Gen 1 caps, Mills resistors, poly switch removed, Cardas binding posts, all drivers Dynamatted and magnets glued, hurricane nuts installed, replaced bass inductor with Erse inductor, Black Hole 5 behind mid woofers, and RDO 194 tweeters. Exterior is all original. I would rate them a conservative 8 out of 10 cosmetically. Pick up 50 miles south of Chicago or I could drive to meet part way. Asking $700.00.

Going on another cruise to Alaska

1st cruise was over 10 years ago and we loved it. Going back next year with my sis and hubby. Man, have prices increased!! We did the whole trip(incl. airfare) for what the room is costing this time.

Ports of call will be Icy Strait, Juneau and Ketchikan. Done some research on excursions but wondered if any Polkies have had first hand experience at any of the ports?

So far we are probably dong whale watching in Icy Strait and possibly the zip line if I can overcome my fear of heights for the 90 seconds, Tracy Arm in Juneau and totem pole park in Ketchikan. Not sure where we'll eat when off the ship though.

SDA-CRS, 5jr Monitors ... Monitor 7? What am I looking for?

$

Hi folks! I have been listening to a pair of 5jr monitors for years - got them for $8 at a yard sale in Illinois and have enjoyed them with my Kenwood KA-9100 amp. They are on small stands, angled slightly upward, which might be original? That said, recently, I've wanted something a bit bigger sounding, more body, more low end. I bought a pair of SDA-CRS speakers on Craigslist in Phoenix last night, $75. They are rough cosmetically with veneer issues, but the components are great. They sound much bigger than the 5jrs, obviously. However, I find the limited listener positioning to be annoying, as I can't walk around my home and enjoy the same full sound - must be seated in the sweet spot. (I have not yet tried the interconnect cable, but I imagine that will not change this issue.) Also, I find the low end unsatisfying on the CRS - kind of loose, even with the low-pass filter engaged on the amp, and the mid-woofer drivers are flabby with deep bass on hip-hop albums. I listen to hip-hop as much as anything else, classic rock, classical, jazz... Medium / low volume mostly, but I do enjoy bumping it up every once in a while for a dance party with my mini Dachshund. He loves the Beastie Boys.

So, here's the multi-part question for discussion. Any advice would be much appreciated:

-Should I get an IC cable? And if I do, will all worries flutter away?
-Without the IC cable, maybe I should treat the CRS speakers as normal monitors, stand them vertically, and move them around the room for the best, widest listening position?
-Or maybe I should recap the 5jr crossovers for a bit more low end response?
-Or is what I'm really looking for a pair of Monitor 7 speakers? Will those be more ideal as a bigger sound than the 5jr with more ample bass a wider sound stage for listening around the living room area?

Cheers!

Tilting towers to get tweeter ear level

Anyone have a solid process for this? I'm toying with raising and lowering the back feet on my 705's. I feel like there is a bit of change to the quality of sound. I'm still in the first few hundred hours but occasionally feel like some things sound a bit harsh on the high end. I've not applied any acoustic treatments to the room yet which might help as well. Thanks!

According to Robert Harley in his book, The Complete Guide to High End Audio:

"Typically, the loudspeaker will be brightest (i.e. have the most treble) when your ears are at the same height as the tweeters or on the tweeter axis. Most tweeters are positioned between 32" and 40" from the floor to coincide with typical listening heights........The degree to which the sound changes with height varies greatly with the loudspeaker. Some models have a broad range over which little change is audible; others can exhibit large tonal changes when you merely straighten your back when listening...."

Trade my LSi15s for LSiM705s?

I really like my LSi15 speakers. Currently driving them with 100watt amp (Schitt Ragnarok), and have contemplated a power upgrade. I also own KEF LS50s, and swap between the two for different experiences.

With the LsiM705s going on sale from time-to-time, I've often wondered how much better they are than my 15s - the dog seeing the bone in the water's reflection.

Are the differences between these two really significant? This is in a 13x26 room with sound treatment. I'm using about half of the room, and don't listen crazy loud - mostly jazz/classical, vinyl.

Nice Marantz DV 7001 SACD/CD/DVD player complete

Selling my Marantz DV 7001 SACD/CD/DVD DVD Audio and so on player I am the original owner of this unit and it is complete with manual, box and packing, remote and power cord. The 7001 has many great reviews online and is known for its CD playback sound. I can attest to this as in side by sides with some REALLY good CD players I preferred the clean and rich more natural sound of the 7001. Audio and video boards are separated and special attention is paid to audio. Can also upsample audio. It plays every type of disc EXCEPT blu ray. See below. It is NOT a bly=u ray player The player works as it should and is one of the best I have had at reading bad discs. it also looks very nice but he top cover has some scratches and a few on the side. The remote is the Marantz system remote (controls some integrateds) but I never really used it so it sat as I used a universal and now I noticed some of the buttons need to be pushed a few time to work. Built like a tank at 16lbs Asking $185 or BO Thanks

Any info on a Velodyne S-1200-B / Servo-1200

$

I might be getting Velodyne S-1200-B as part of a package, although I am estimating it will cost me about $100. It's 1991 vintage. I am not sure if ti is worth it. I have heard people say they won't give up even their old Velodyne subs, and a mix of they are musical, and great, but some say the older ones were good for their time but not that great anymore.

It appears to be the bottom of their line at the time, but still a very good pricey sub in its day.

There is not much info online. Does anyone remember anything about these? Is it a good or at least fair deal even if I resell it? Is my money better saved for SVS, or HSU etc?

Excellent Condition Rogue Ares Magnum Upgraded Phono Preamp. I can not see one blemish or mark anywhere, exceptionally clean. A 9/10 on the Audiogon Scale.

The Stock Ares is a superb Phono Stage as is, the Magnum Upgrades take it to another level. The Upgrades include;

A better step up transformer, "Blue" Cinemag 1254, that provides more gain (about 10dB more) and better sound.
The Ares Magnum uses better inner-stage coupling caps.

Improved RCA jacks

The Ares will drive about any Cartridge on the Market today utilizing it's pure Tube Circuit, accepts 2-12AU7 & 2-12AX7's. Easy access to Dip Switches, and very adjustable, including a "0" Capacitance Setting. Comes fitted with a like new set JJ Tubes.

The better version of "What you are listening too"?

$

This thread is dedicated toward those who are involved in the other thread of, "What are you listening too?" and others that listen to a song but yearn for a better recording of said song/album.

We all want the best out of our systems, correct?

Well, it all starts with the recording.

So this thread is dedicated to those who yearn to have the best of what they listen too. I know that personally, I have 7 different versions of many albums just looking for the best sonic version of what is offered. Dire Straights MFN is but one of them. For others, it may be Pink Floyd, DSotM. How many of those do you own?

Well, let's discuss what version is best with each.

No pre-read reviews are welcome here. Only real experiences. What have YOU actually HEARD that sounds the best to you?

Looking to buy 2 channel amp

Like the title reads, I'm looking to purchase a nice 2 channel amplifier. I'm searching for the likes of B&K 200.2, ex4420. Perhaps a Parasound hca1500, hca2200. I would also consider Adcom gfa555. I'm sure there are plenty more that would be comparable to these.

I would need it to be able to handle 8 and 4 ohm loads. If anyone has a spare sitting around not being used please reach out to me. I'm located in Southern California.

Thanks

Latest Netflix find

I'd like this thread to be dedicated strictly to Netflix. Perhaps it will help others find shows.

My latest find is for the kids:
Called Beat Bugs:
"an animated series featuring renditions of the Fab Four’s songs"
http://variety.com/2016/digital/news/netflix-beatles-beat-bugs-original-1201702121/

It's cute, not violent geared towards 4-7 years old I'd say.

I'm looking for show ideas for the kids and for my wife and I

What have you recently discovered?

Electrostatic speakers and phase/polarity inversion

My EE Minimax preamp evidently inverts phase (or polarity). Not sure about the proper nomenclature but you know what I mean (I think). One solution is to invert your speakers connections but my question is, does this work the same with electrostatic speakers vs conventional speakers?
