I miss Polkatese, Aarron, Madmax,Snake, believe it or not Troy and Russ just to name a few. There are so many great people who use to post around here and I don't see them anymore.

What did you do to your stereo rig today?

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. This thread is dedicated to....well, read the title. Pretty self explanatory.

Today, I measured the distance of the subs/speakers to the listening position down to 1/8 of an inch including the toe in and will be messing around with dialing in the Rythmik F-25's.

What have you done for your rig today?

What a crappy recording!!!! The music itself is actually quite good, but the amount of compression on the cd is the worst I have EVER heard. It is so bad as to be unlistenable, which sucks, because they are a great band.

Now that they have a studio behind them, I was expecting this would sound better than their self-produced stuff that was coming out over the past couple of years. I don't know if the LP version or download is better, but steer well clear of the cd.

Vintage SDA-SRS Revival & Restoration (Return to service)

Please let me say in advance, thank you to anyone who proves to be helpful.

I have just had an amazing experience that is best explained with a metaphor.
"My crazy uncle and I were cleaning out his barn and we found a vintage muscle car stored behind a random stack of crap. He told me to take it, just get it out of the way.

In this situation you don't just give it a shot of starting fluid and a battery jump, hop in and take it on a road trip. There is a process of changing fluids, belts, filters etc before it is road worthy."

With this thinking in mind I recently stumbled onto a cache of vintage electronics, including a left and right pair of Polk SDS-SRS Speakers.
The speakers appear to mechanically sound.
There are no cracks or fractures in what appear to be butyl surrounds and the cones appear to be in good shape. The cabinets and grills do not appear to be abused other than being very dusty from sitting unused in the back of a garage for ~15 years
The speakers have not been exposed to water but in Indiana there is plenty of humid summer days.
The ambient humidity has corroded some of the speaker mounting screws. This is not a specific issue other that to help define the storage environment.

Soooo,,, with this being said I think there is likely some advice (or opinions) to be had related to a "Return to a service protocol".

How do I start to use these marvels of analog tech without running the risk of killing them prematurely? I am specifically concerned with the elasticity of the speaker surrounds and vic coil bellows.

I am thinking to use low level white noise for several hours (if not days) to flex the moving components gently for a while to restore flexibility. Further I would be interested in any pre power-up electrical test I might do with an ohm, inductance or capacitance measurement.

As a last point, I do not want to take unfair advantage of my friends generosity related to these speakers. Does the community have any thoughts related to the "As Found" monetary value of these speakers?

As a retired engineer of 40+ years I am looking forward to a mutually beneficial relationship with this forum, thanks in advance for your time and your thoughts.r27nyitnryzo.jpg

Compared to most of you guys balls deep into the rabbit hole, I am perfectly aware that I am just skimming the surface.

I have been into vintage gear for too long, I own and restores a few Marantz amps from the 70's and really like their sound. Lately, I got myself interested in less older gear and got older Parasound HCA 1200II power amp and a PHP850 pre.

2 weeks later I got the PLP2000 pre, still ancient and outdated for most... but to me, this was like a revelation moment... my Marantz are blown away from the map!

Pretty cool and well-built and great sounding stuff, the specs are amazing and that preamp is an authentic work of art!

WOW!!!

I've made a plan to move into a higher playing field of audio than I am in right now, due to a thread by Mister Pig at AK, saying if you sold everything and started over, what could you do?

And you can see where this is going. So, I am selling almost every piece of equipment that I own, Partly to save space, partly to help fund a mission trip in Spring 2019, and partly to move into the higher playing field I mentioned before.

Boston Acoustics VR2: These are great relatively small tower speakers. They can produce an almost full range of sound, with a 1-inch tweeter, 4-inch midrange, and dual 6 1/2 inch woofers. Lean to the brighter side of things. They work perfectly, and look almost as nice, with a single spot of paint on the bottom left side of the cabinet, minor scratches, which are few and far between, and one crack in the frame in each grill. One grill also has a small hole on the top right side. $300

Boston Acoustics PV500: This is a nice, small, musical subwoofer that I really like. I believe it is servo controlled, and it is real quick. The amp and driver both work perfectly, and everything is great cosmetically. The potentiometers have been cleaned. $125

NAD C352: Cosmetically very clean, with only worn off paint around the faceplate corners. Nice integrated, with lots of current and a bunch of inputs. $300

Monitor Audio Radius 90s: These are one of the few things I am actually sad to see go. They are in excellent cosmetic shape, with a couple very light scratches from normal use. they also come with stands, which are darn near perfect. The stands have the original box. Also have all manuals, wall mounting hardware, etc. One tweeter has been popped in by the grill, but came back out, and still works and sounds fine. (The grills are removed with a hook, and tend to go sideways if you aren't careful when removing them.) I cannot stress how much I really like these speakers, they really are stellar little guys. $300

Shipping is not available as of right now.

There will be more added in the future as I swap out parts of my temporary system to keep my listening to music.

If I'm asking too much for something, let me know, and I'll take care of it.

Selling a pair of Cardas Neutral Reference interconnects This is a 1 meter pair with RCAs they are a little discolored on the jacket and the heat wraps was replaced on one end.. Very well done. Work perfectly. You want a neutral cable this is it unlike other Cardas cables. Great reviews online. These sold for $500 when new I owned a couple of pairs from 2001 to 2010 and really liked them but moved on . Picked up this one for testing and just in case but cannot really afford to have nice stuff laying around Asking $145 that is a steal and below the going rate.

Marantz CD/SACD

I haven't had time to rip any SACD's, so I thought I might look for a used player with decent musicality to replace an Oppo for a little while. Is there a Marantz CD/SACD player that:
  • plays CD's at least as well as a Jolida JD100 or similar level
  • plays SACD's (at least 2-channel)
  • can be found for $500 used or less
I'll have a Chord Qute (DSD) DAC to use if needed.

Thanks for any advice,
Craig

We decided to go see thks movie while on vacation. It was very, very good! I enjoyed it greatly, as did the rest of my family. It also has a great sound track, which I've listened to 3 times since last week (saying a lot, because I've gotten to listen to music 5 times.)

I was not expecting much at all, but I had a really good time. I do recommend that if you go to see it, make sure you are in a theater that has good sound.

Anyone else seen this movie and have any thoughts on it?

Brad Paisley - "Whisky Lullaby"

Hello all, Tom here. I know many of you do not enjoy country music. This thread is not geared to you. You may, however, want to check this one out.

It was introduced in a back door discussion that most here do not know about but I am bringing part of our conversation out for all to see. Russ (Lightman1) had posted that he listened to a song, "Whisky Lullaby" by Brad Paisley....and that he felt the need to do something "manly" afterwards. That comment struck my curiosity, so I looked up the You Tube video. That can be seen below (If I linked it correctly)

VERY powerful song that also features Allison Krauss. I ordered the CD the very moment after I watched the video. Even though I thought I would get Amazon's 2 day shipping on Prime, for some reason, it took around two weeks to get here. Well, it showed up and I played it tonight.

I was pleasantly surprised that it was a well recorded song and the low notes dug DEEP. If you get a moment, whether you like Country music or not, check it out. Here is the album if you are interested in trying it for a spin in your rig -

Thanks Russ! Good choice my man. Not bad for a sheep chasin', gun toten', dip spittin', Justin Bieber listenin', big truck drivin' redneck!

RTIA vs Signature Series

Hey All,

Another noob question and owner of Rtias.

Now I been researching Polk, the new signature series seems to be getting alot exposure or marketing. What is the main difference between the 2? Which has better sound which I know is subjective and comparison in build quality?

Thanks,
RB

Temporary move to RI - tenporary 2 channel rig

Hi all,

I recently completed a move to Newport Rhode Island for a 6 month Navy school as I prepare to move on to the next chapter of my naval career. I am separated from my fiancé while I am up here (and unfortunately probably for the next week 2-3 years) so I am living in a navy housing roommate program. I was lucky enough to get the master in the duplex which left me pretty good room to set this up:

Klipsch The Sixes on trans deco 24” stands with some 1” wood blocks because the top plates weren’t big enough. Currently the only source is my Bluesound Node 2 (Wireworld eclipse interconnects) as I suffered an embarrassing snafu with my record player which will probably force me to get something else. I have added a Pangea Vulcan turntable stand to finish it off.

I am extremely impressed with this 1200ish dollar setup. This little stereo is a tenth of the cost of what I am used to listening to and I am not disappointed whatsoever which is saying something I think. These Klipsches sound great!

Growth Continues

So back in October when I hosted the meet at my place, I ended up getting a preamp/monoblock set from a client via trade in. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I hooked them up and they completely blew me away. Of all the high end solid state I have heard, they were able to stand up to it all and actually provide me with the best solid state experience to date. Shortly after, I began trying to find a way to get the brand in my hands.

Today, I am proud to announce that the transition of distribution has taken place. I have yet another Italian brand to add to my stable of imported lines - Norma Audio.
