Speaking of Stereophile

OK, no one but me was, but I mentioned Sterophile in a recent post, and it got me to thinkin' that it might be worth sharing this.

A recent post at AA documents the end of an era ("nearly 33-1/3 years" B) ) at Stereophile. Long time editor John Atkinson is stepping down as Editor-in-Chief, to focus on his quantitative assessments of components under review (test), and to continue uploading legacy Stereophile content to the web. Going forward, another JA, Jim Austin, is now Stereophile's editor-in-chief.

I’ve had these speakers probably almost 15 years now, they are fantastic I just don’t have them set up currently. I might get them set up so that folks can listen to them at our upcoming get together
I was in the mood for messing with things, I decided to open these up and have a look around. Here are some shots of the construction and drivers and crossover of this fantastic bookshelf speaker fw3wucjza2kq.jpeg

So let me preface this by saying that I am very happy with these speakers (now) and for the price I got them new I have nothing to complain about BUT:
When I got them home, I unboxed them which took quite a bit of work. They were double boxed and styrofoam packed along with velvet bags to protect the finish. Nicely packed.
The bases were separated from the boxes and had to be screwed on. The finish and overall look of these towers is absolutely amazing.

So I was listening to them last night and they sounded fabulous. I started reading more about an issue I had read before I purchased them and went ahead and tested for the problem:
Apparently either in production or in shipping, a small leak developed between chambers. Meaning that the supposed sealed driver/passive radiator boxes which should be sealed from each other were actually letting a little air between them. Only two of these bass drivers next to each other were leaking to the point when you pushed on one of the passive radiators, the one above it would move. Not ideal. To make things worse, I had read about a larger issue. In some cases the sir could leak between the top bass driver and the mid/tweet enclosure. This was harder to test for. I saw a video of one fella who had the issue test with a lighter in front of the mid and pushed on the passive radiator below to see if the flame moved. Which it did on both of my towers.
Now keep in mind I had already played them and thought they sounded leaps above the lsim’s.
I had three options in my mind, 1st was to do what most sane individuals who spent this much on speakers would do, pack them all back up and take them back to the dealer. 2nd was to deal with it which is not something I think any of us would do. And 3rd is quite possibly the option that no one else in their right mind would consider- fix it!
I slept on this decision as I knew if I did this, most likely returning them would be out of the cards. I weighed some options:
I love the sound already
I got them for a fantastic price
I don’t think that (besides this thread) they could deny me a warranty claim for any replacement drivers down the road should they be needed as I purchased them from an authorized Elac dealer.
All of these gave me the confidence to fix this issue.
So I knew that if I was doing this, I would do it very very carefully and trace all steps to ale sure all went back EXACTLY as it was.
First step was to remove the aluminum plate from the front and expose the driver screws. Then remove the mid/tweet and the three passive radiators.
wzzomsnbyu21.jpeg
Then remove the three internal 6.5” woofers.
I did this to both towers and prepped the area for working with the latex quick dry caulk I had purchased for $8 (two tubes)
fwhas73808nj.jpeg
I then proceeded to sleal all corners I could reach. Every gap and seal between chambers.
This took about 1 hour to do.
One of the problem areas was the plate they used to seal the wires for the mid/tweet. It only had a foam gasket around it and was an obvious weak point.
5lsci6j95t46.jpeg
I sealed it with the same caulk.
I did notice that all components inside were fantastic quality (enclosure QC not withstanding)

Taking my time to put all back after the caulk dried.
hi1waoz0ynne.jpeg
When I got done all was exactly as it looked before I started.
bw0wt42b8qfb.jpeg
Is when I tested the lighter, nothing. And pushing on the passive radiators is like pushing on the SVS SB16 , moves very slowly in and out. Just as they should.
Now most of you are going to say that you would never put up with that, and your right. I don’t argue that point. I just know that now (after 2 1/2 hours of work and $8 ) they are EXACTLY how they should be. Sound even better (I would hope) than before.
I am very happy with these towers and I’m not sure anyone else might even notice the issue when they purchased these if it wasn’t for a* retentive folks out there.
Great towers and phenomenal imaging and mids. Leaps and bounds above the polks.
Just disappointed that the QC (or shipping, but less likely) is sub par for this level or speaker.
I am still breaking them in and am listening to DSOTM on Sacd now. Time and money wow. Like I have never heard them.
Thanks for reading

Non-Jesse approved Bi-amping

So yes, as I mentioned in another thread, I just picked up my second pair of Linn monoblocks. Beautiful little power houses these are and I had asked my dealer to try and get two more for me. He came through. These are built like tanks
03iyyazjai0a.jpeg
4058r26najcu.jpeg

So I have been reading a ton on this and have come to the conclusion (because of the deal I got on these and I already had a pair to begin with) that Bi-amping is something I am subscribing to. Please understand that I recognize that folks who get their receiver and use the built in feature for bi-amping are really not getting anything at all mainly because it’s being fed from the same power supply. I also recognize that if someone uses bi-amping to double output, that’s not the way to do it either. For me it was all about a reduction in intermodulation distortion. And having separate power supply’s for the two sections of my lsim705’s has done (as I listen) exactly as I had hoped.

Listening to Hotel California in 24/192 wav the snare has such an impact and decay that was not missing before but no where as pronounced as it is now. As I dive back into Dskips list, the Little Drummer boy shows much more definition in the highest notes and decays beautifully.

Nice vintage Pioneer SX 939 70w/ch receiver from 1975

For sale vintage Pioneer SX 939 receiver. Not some garage sale find. I am the 2nd owner or this unit. It is from the golden era of Pioneer and was made in 1974 or 75. Features 70 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 100 in 4 ohms. I have tried or owned Pioneer receivers from the SX 050, SX 080s and SX 3*** and have found the SX 030 series to be the best sounding to my ears.

Has bass and treble controls with turnovers, high, low filters, nono stereo, loudness, -20db muting . Also has hookups for 2 turntables, 2 tape decks, 3 sets of speakers, 1 aux, 1 adaptor and preamp out main amp in.
The unit works great and the controls work as they should. The controls feel great and silky. All lights work except the FM source indicator light. This bulb can found for around $1.30 . Also the AM antena is missing but those can be found. The receiver looks beautiful when turned on

The front panel is very nice with a couple of nicks on the very top edge. The cabinet is walnut and also very nice. There is one very small lifing right next to the side of the top grill 1/4 inch long and on the very back lowest corner. Oveall very very nice and presentable. This thing weighs 40 lbs and is built like a tank. Put the build quality together with the look and the sound and we have winner from when gear was gear. Check my feedback Asking $239

There seem to be a lot of stats on the larger fans and it's somewhat confusing. We are looking for a 3 blade large fan with dimmable lighting. Since it will be in the area where we listen to music I want something that is capable of moving a fair amount of air but do it with a minimal amount of noise. Anybody have a make/model that fits the bill?

RIP Keith Flint of The Prodigy

Just saw the awful news this morning that Keith Flint of The Prodigy is dead at 49 years old. Liam Howlett sadly confirmed that the cause of death was suicide. RIP.

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/03/04/uk/keith-flint-prodigy-dead-scli-gbr-intl/index.html

When I saw the article pop up on my screen, I was fully stunned for a moment, I had to re-read the headline several times. The news is hitting me much harder than I would've imagined. :(

Prodigy was favorite group for many years, after being exposed to them when I was 13 years old by hearing "Firestarter" and then later "Breathe". Their music was monumental in me discovering electronic music, and I would not be where I am today without having heard their songs.

I can't tell you how many hours me and my friends spent listening to Prodigy's tracks over and over. When Firestarter was released, it's sound was unlike anything else at the time, and it created a spark (no pun intended) inside of me that inspired a lifelong journey of appreciation and love for electronic music.

Keith was always the face of the group and the member who I for some reason felt the most connected with. He was incredibly talented and had an insane stage presence and energy. I just wish I could have seen him perform live in concert before he left us. May he rest in peace.

It’s been over three and a half years since we had to put our Black Lab, Scuba down. And as much as we wanted another dog, our hectic lifestyle with running kids and traveling was just easier without a dog. But, life is better with dogs and we have been ‘talking’ about getting the kids a puppy for the past year or so. As much as we should NOT have gotten a puppy right now (should have waited until summer), we just could not pass this beautiful girl up! She’s a purebred English Cream Golden Retriever from a local family (not a breeder). From the second we met her last night, we knew she was staying with us. We still have not agreed on a name for her, but we have some ideas. She’s been a little spoiled so far by me, my wife, and our two extremely happy daughters. She’s sitting at my side right now as I type this.
